Mexico is the last, best place on Earth for wild bobwhite quail. Mexico is the last, best place on Earth for wild bobwhite quail.

Many veteran bobwhite quail hunters say that central Tamaulipas is the last, best place for wild quail. There is simply no other place on the entire planet where upland hunters can find, 20-30-40 coveys of wild birds in a day. Outfitters Gerry Glasco and Ralph Wilson have many years experience hunting in northern Mexico and they have covered all of the right components to hunt these birds effectively.

  • New model, custom-built four-door hunting rigs with seats and dog boxes offer comfort, as well as quick access to dogs on point.
  • Glasco has meticulously trained his Mexican guides/doghandlers, many of whom have been with him for ten years. They have literally hundreds of days experience with clients in the field and speak good hunting English. Ralph Wilson and his adult son personally guide all of their parties.
  • Years of experience has allowed them to refine their kennels specifically to the Tamaulipas agricultural/ranch environment.
  • Limits are quite liberal.
Laguna Madre ducks coming into the decoys. Laguna Madre ducks coming into the decoys.

The Laguna Madre estuary duck and goose habitat extends from the Texas border all the way 200 miles south to Tampico. Gerry’s lodge is a thirty minute drive from the northern end of this habitat, and he has 30 blinds over both shallow fresh water ponds and in the estuary. On a normal day, hunters will see literally thousands (or tens of thousands) of pintails, redheads, teal and other quality ducks — birds which have escaped the pressure of hunting in the U.S. and which come well to calling and decoys. Each blind is provided with a guide/caller and a lab retriever to bring in downed ducks. Again, limits are liberal.

As mentioned earlier, the 30-mile radius around Aztec Lodge is home to huge migratory populations of whitewing doves and even greater numbers of non-migratory mourning doves. No where else on Earth — not Argentina, not Bolivia, not Africa — nowhere else are doves and quail found in such quantities in such close proximity to a first-class lodge.

If you like the idea of a duck/quail combination (Glasco), or a quail/dove combination (Wilson), there is simply no other location on earth that can compare to Tamaulipas.
